The window shade cornerstone

The four shade categories and which fits where.

The window shade category covers four distinct products: roller, Roman, cellular, and woven wood. Each has a different aesthetic, a different price band, and a different best-use room. On the Florida Panhandle every house benefits from at least two of the four. Roller in the bedrooms for blackout. Cellular in west-facing rooms for solar gain. Roman in the dining room for tailored fabric. Woven wood in the great room for coastal-organic texture. We have spec'd this exact pattern in Cordova Park, Crystal Beach, Carillon Beach, and Spring Hill homes since 1996.

The most common buyer questions: what is the difference between the four shade types, which one saves the most on energy bills, what is right for a primary bedroom, what is right for kitchen and bath, how much do shades cost, can they be motorized, what is the lead time. Short version: roller is simplest with a single fabric panel, Roman folds into pleats, cellular is honeycomb-structured for insulation, woven wood is natural fiber; cellular saves the most on energy; roller with blackout (or dual-roller stack) for primary bedroom; roller with MR fabric for kitchen and bath; $18 to $42 per square foot across the four; yes all four motorize; 3 to 5 weeks lead.

Dedicated pages: roller shades, Roman shades, woven wood shades, and motorization.

The four shade categories

Which shade fits which room.

Roller shades

Single fabric panel on a tube. Minimal stack. Largest fabric library. Cleanest motorization. The default for bedrooms (with blackout), great rooms (with screen openness), baths, and kitchens. See roller shades.

Roman shades

Fabric folds into horizontal pleats as it raises. More tailored than a drape, more substantial than a roller. Flat, classic, tucked, and balloon folds. Right for primary bedrooms (with blackout), dining rooms, and great rooms. See Roman shades.

Cellular shades (Hunter Douglas Sonnette and Duette)

Honeycomb fabric structure traps an insulating air pocket. Cuts solar gain by 40 to 60 percent. The right call for west-facing Panhandle windows and energy-sensitive primary bedrooms. Top-down-bottom-up lift available.

Woven wood shades

Natural bamboo, reed, jute, or hardwood weave in a roll-up or Roman format. Coastal-organic look. Right for great rooms, sunrooms, dining rooms with garden view, and bedrooms with blackout liner. See woven wood.

Cordless lift across all four

Modern safety standard. Available on all four shade categories. Slightly higher cost than corded; required spec for homes with kids or pets.

Motorization across all four

Lutron RA3, Somfy, Hunter Douglas PowerView, Alpha Tubular. All four shade types motorize. See our motorization page for hub and platform detail.
