Roman shades are fabric shades that fold into horizontal pleats as they raise. They look like a tailored fabric panel when down and stack neatly at the head when raised. More substantial than a roller shade, more architecturally finished than a standard drape, and far more customizable in fabric and color than either. On the Florida Panhandle they live mostly in primary bedrooms (with blackout liner), formal dining rooms, and great rooms where the homeowner wants a fabric softness without the visual weight of full drapes. We see them most in Pensacola's Cordova Park, Destin's Kelly Plantation golf homes, and Mobile's Spring Hill historic stock.

Fold styles and fabrics
The Roman shade options.
Flat fold
Modern. No pleats; the fabric panel stays flat until it raises into a clean stack. Right for contemporary interiors in Destiny by the Sea, Carillon Beach, and new-build West Mobile.
Classic fold
The default. Soft horizontal pleats that read as tailored without being formal. Right for most primary bedrooms and dining rooms.
Tucked fold
Tighter pleats with reverse stitching that adds visual structure. Right for traditional Cordova Park, Old Dauphin Way, and Spring Hill interiors.
Balloon fold
Deep gathered pleats with a soft swag at the bottom. Right for formal dining rooms in antebellum and Greek Revival homes; not a fit for modern interiors.
Performance polyester fabrics
Polyester or polyester-blend fabrics handle Gulf Coast humidity. Hunter Douglas Designer Roman performance fabrics resist mildew and fade. We will not spec a high-cotton fabric in a beachfront primary bedroom.
Blackout liner
Standard on bedroom specs. $4 to $8 per square foot premium. Hunter Douglas Designer Roman includes the blackout option natively with clean attachment.
What Roman shades cost
Honest pricing.
Graber Roman with standard fabric at the lower end, $22 to $28 per square foot. Hunter Douglas Designer Roman standard $26 to $34. Designer Roman with blackout and custom fabric $32 to $40. PowerView motorization adds $200 to $400 per opening.
