Now serving Mobile County, Alabama

The window treatment shop Mobile historic homes have called since 1996.

Mobile has the deepest historic stock on the Gulf Coast east of New Orleans. The De Tonti Square district carries French Colonial, Federal, and Greek Revival homes that predate the Civil War. The Oakleigh Garden district holds 1830s-and-onward townhomes and cottages. The Old Dauphin Way historic district stretches from Broad Street west to Spring Hill Avenue with a mix of Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne homes. Spring Hill, on the western ridge, runs antebellum mansions, 1920s revival cottages, and mid-century brick ranches under deep oak canopy. Midtown sits south of Spring Hill with smaller 1920s-1940s bungalows. West Mobile is the new-build belt, from Schillinger Road out to Tanner Williams.

The window treatment math in Mobile is shaped by two things: humidity and historic-district expectation. Mobile sits at the head of Mobile Bay; year-round indoor humidity often runs above 70 percent. Real wood blinds bow in baths and laundry rooms; basswood plantation shutters can take baths in West Mobile but want poly in Old Dauphin Way and bayfront. We default to Hunter Douglas Polysatin and Norman Woodlore Plus for any opening with sustained humidity exposure. Basswood plantation shutters in 3.5 or 4.5 inch louvers fit the antebellum and Federal stock in Spring Hill and De Tonti Square cleanly when painted and color-matched.

Interior plantation shutters do not trigger Mobile historic district architectural review. Exterior shutters do. We have measured the historic stock for decades and know which louver width and divider rail placement preserves the original window proportion. Standard lead times are 2 to 4 weeks for blinds, 4 to 6 weeks for plantation shutters. Schedule the in-home measure.

What Mobile window treatments actually need

Built for Mobile Bay humidity and antebellum windows.

Louver width tuned to the original sash

Spring Hill's antebellum and Federal stock has 6-over-6 and 9-over-9 original double-hung windows with proportions that 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch louvers honor. The wrong louver width on a Greek Revival window will look wrong forever. We measure for original sash and propose louver width on the in-home consult.

Divider rails at the meeting rail

De Tonti Square Federal and Old Dauphin Way Italianate windows have an original sash meeting rail that wants to be honored. A divider rail in your plantation shutter at that exact horizontal line preserves the window proportion when the shutters are closed. Standard for us; rare for chain installers.

Poly for humidity-heavy rooms

Mobile baths, kitchens, and laundry rooms get poly across all zip codes. West Mobile new-construction primary baths get poly. Bayfront and downtown high-rise condos get poly throughout. We will not bid basswood in a room where humidity will swell the joints.

Spring Hill oak-canopy moderation

The deep oak canopy across Spring Hill moderates humidity and UV. Basswood plantation shutters do well in Spring Hill living rooms and bedrooms because the trees do most of the work. Same is true for Midtown and the inland half of Old Dauphin Way.

Eastern Shore coverage on the same trip

If you have properties in both Mobile and on the Eastern Shore (Daphne, Spanish Fort, Fairhope), we can pair the visits and quote both on the same day. See our Daphne page and Fairhope page for the Eastern Shore overview.

Pre-Mardi Gras scheduling

December and January are our busiest Mobile months because owners want shutters installed before Mardi Gras parade season and house guests. We pace the queue starting in October. Book the consult early if you want a January install.

They came across from Pensacola, walked our house in Spring Hill, and had a quote on the spot. The basswood plantation shutters matched our trim like they had been there since the 1920s.
