Pensacola has the best historic stock on the Panhandle, and historic windows do not like the wrong shutter. The East Hill bungalows want 3.5 inch louvers with a divider rail at the original sash meeting point. North Hill's Acadian-Creole and Mission Revival homes want 4.5 inch louvers in painted basswood, color-matched to the front door. The 1920s Florida Cracker stock around Bayview Park wants a tight 2.5 inch louver that does not overpower the small upper sash. Cordova Park and Scenic Heights traditionals want a clean 3.5 inch profile in either basswood or hybrid. Each of those calls comes off the in-home measure, not a sales sheet.
The coastal half of the question is material. Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, and any opening within a mile of the Gulf or the bay sees humidity above 70 percent for most of the year, with onshore salt spray adding chloride load. Basswood swells and the joints can open. Poly, by contrast, is dimensionally stable and the color is integral to the material; nothing fades because nothing is on the surface. We hybrid the two in most Pensacola homes: basswood in formal rooms inland, poly in baths, kitchens, laundry rooms, and any coastal-side opening.

What Pensacola plantation shutters actually need
Bathrooms in any Pensacola zip code get poly. Kitchens with a steam-heavy cooking setup get poly. Laundry rooms get poly. Living rooms and bedrooms in Cordova Park, Scenic Heights, and the inland half of North Hill can take basswood. Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key are poly throughout. We do not bid the wrong material to make a quote cheaper.
3.5 inch louvers fit most East Hill and Cordova openings cleanly. 4.5 inch louvers are right for North Hill's larger Mission Revival windows and the great rooms of Scenic Heights traditionals. 2.5 inch louvers belong on the 1920s Florida Cracker upper sashes around Bayview Park and on transom windows. Wrong louver width on the wrong sash looks wrong forever.
The East Hill bungalow stock and the 1920s North Hill homes have an original sash meeting rail you want to honor. A divider rail in your plantation shutters at that exact horizontal line preserves the original window's proportion when the shutters are closed. Standard practice for us; rarely standard practice for chain installers.
North Hill is in the Pensacola Historic District. Painted basswood shutters need to land within the approved palette. We pull the color codes from current district guidance and match to your trim and door. Approval typically comes back inside two weeks. We have done it before.
